, indianapolis is trying to get back on its feet after it was walloped by the blizzard. this city, brought to a virtual standstill. the storm dumping more than seven inches of snow here. >> there we go. >> reporter: residents struggled to dig out. those whiteout conditions seen across the lower midwest states. in southern illinois, a foot and a half of snow. in cleveland, ohio, freezing rain turned to snow. cancelling about 80% of flights in and out of cleveland. across arkansas, power lines snapped, leaving nearly 200,000 customers in the dark. and in the south, devastating tornadoes, causing panic as they touched down. this surveillance video taken at a walgreens in mobile, alabama, shows a tornado ripping through the parking lot. inside, terrified customers scrambling for cover. from texas to alabama, at least 34 tornadoes rumbled across the area. this twister had winds of more than 110 miles per hour, flattening this church and anything unlucky enough to be in its path. until this morning, the storm is bearing down and creating havoc in the northeast. in new york city, wind gusts of ne

've had an inch of rain so far in the new york city area. another half-inch of rain coming. 45-mile-per-hour, 50-mile-per-hour winds. take a look at the damage that came in with the winds. four stories' worth of scaffolding collapsing. just one of the scaffolding collapses that we have seen in new york. that caused all that unhappiness -- but it ripped scaffolding in new york city today, rocked rough waves across the great lakes, and left far from perfect roads for the 83 million expected to hit them this weekend. we took an icy drive from des moines to chicago. we're going east on i-80, going only 20 miles per hour. it's a full ice rink, even though the skies are completely blue and look at the westbound lanes. they've been like that for about a half mile. we don't know how long that goes. there are new weather woes on the west coast too. heavy rain drenching the pacific northwest causing landslides in oregon, and shutting down rail service in parts of washington state after 11 landslides in three days. the weather this weekend is a whole lot quieter, so good news, aside from the storm in the west. next question, who gets a white christmas? look at this map. the rockies, the plains, where we had the blizzard, plenty of cold to keep the snow there and northeast and new england could see a little fresh white, at least in some parts. cynthia? >> thank you, ginger. >>> we move on to a somb

into nud. a librarian from kansas city, actually threw a national unfriend party from the library and sent this picture of her nud party. you can see it was a raver. the only people who showed up was this kid. alicia said, and i quote, attendance was not what we hoped. but i would argue that that is the point of national unfriend day, it's not about socializing, it's about anti-socializing, the fewer people at the party the better. that's what nud is all about, in a way alicia had the most successful nud party of all time and probably the only nud party of all time. i thank her for her service. we all do. : the rebels have taken the fight to syria's biggest cities, battling assad's strong holds, his palace in damascus, while fighters have overrun one of the largest military bases outside the city of aleppo. american officials fear the likelihood of assad using chemical weapons is rising. they say they have proof they've been prepared. we went to meet a man who shares those fears. driving along a dark back country road near turkey's border with syria. he told us that until 2008, he was a chief of staff in the chemical weapons program. he said he worked on the defense side, in charge of preparing troops for dealing with attacks and safety equipment. what specific chemical weapons does the assad regime have? he said they have mustard gas, along with a highly toxic nerve agent, vx, sarin and tabun. the regime has started to fall and deteriorate, he argues. it's highly possible assad will start using chemical weapons to kill his own people. >> i think it's a last-ditch effort and one they don't want to use but are considering it. >> reporter: if the regime crumbles, the u.s. fears the weapon
